Redskins @ Packers
Green Bay, WI --Two storied franchises met on Lambeau's hollowed ground as the Packers tossed out the welcome mat for the Redskins. Packers' RB Ryan Grant was the workhorse in this one for Green Bay. Grant was the main cog in the counterstrike to the Skins high-powered offense. The Skins D seemed off-balance all game long with Packers guards and tackles moving in every direction. Grant's 170 yards on the ground kept the Packers in the Skins redzone most of the day; Grant would reach the endzone himself twice. With Washington's D suffering from motion sickness the offense did its best to keep pace. With RB Fred Jackson out, RB Chauncey Washington did his best to imitate Grant's performance. Not quite measuring Grant's yardage Washington did manage 2 scores of his own. But it would be WR James Dawson who would steal the show. Dawson would grab 6 passes for 206 yards and 3 scores. Twice has Dawson gone over 200 yards and twice has he caught 3 scores but never in the same game. And the Skins would need it as the Packers offense show no signs of slowing. The sweeping landscape grew cold but the Packers offense didn't. The flourishing running game of Green Bay would setup a Playaction pass deep to WR Greg Jennings for a wide-open score. But it wouldn't be enough as the Skins win this shootout 52-38. |

Make it Rain |
Philadelphia, PA --To wind up the regular season, the elements treated the fans to a game-long shower. While some Philly fans definitely needed it the Skins and Eagles would've preferred to wait til after the game. Early fumbles by Washington kept the Philly offense on the field but the Skins' D would hold them to field goals. The Skins offense would dispense the running game and go airborne. WR Santana Moss caught a big pass from Leftwich for a 72yd strike. WR James Dawson would make several catches to keep drives moving and he too would find the endzone. It seemed Leftwich would have a great game until Eagles DE Bryan Smith got going. 3 sacks of Leftwich by Smith stalled several drives. McNabb found similar problems as he would be sacked 7 times by Washington; Leftwich would go down 6 times. As the field became increasingly worse the game slowed. A late interception by FS Jimmy Williams put Washington in another scoring position to finalize this mud bath -- 31-9. |

Maryland State Championship |
Who wants to ride in this?!
Landover, MD --The Battle of Maryland took place at FedEx field this year. The Redskins weren't the most hospitable guests. The Skins jumped out to a 16-0 lead in the first quarter. After QB Jason Campbell hooked up withWR Santana Moss for a score (Leftwich out for a play due to injury), the Skins offense got the ball back again and would eventually punt. The punt would put the Ravens with their backs to their endzone. After 3 plays the Ravens would punt and DB Domonique Foxworth would sack punter Sam Koch. Then later in that quarter FB Kyle Eckel would catch a short pass from Leftwich and break a couple tackles and pick up some blocks for a rumbling 66yd score. The Ravens would get on the board in the 2nd when the young Joe Flacco hit WR Mark Clayton for a score.
Leftwich continued his solid play in the 3rd quarter, hitting WR James Dawson for a 49yd score. Leftwich would only miss 5 times in this game and seemed to find his rhythm with all his targets. RB Clinton Portis went over the century mark and help to keep the ball away from the Ravens. The Skins win the State Championship 35-16. |

Redskins @ Cowboys |
Irvin, TX -Bitter rivals met this weekend. The Cowboys hosted the Washington Redskins. The Boys opened up and scored early with precision passing and hard-nose running. The Skins' rhythm seemed off in the first and the Dallas pass rush didn't help matters. It wouldn't be till the second half that Washington got on the board. The Skins would put up a quick 14pts when RB Clinton Portis got in after a good drive. CB Fred Smoot would intercept a Romo pass and take it back for a score. The Skins D would then hold Dallas to only 2 field goals in the quarter and take a small 14-13 lead into the half.
The Skins would move more towards the run in the 3rd quarter due to the fierce rush on QB Byron Leftwich. Portis and RB Tatum Bell would combine for 230 yards on the ground. Helping to keep a explosive Cowboys' offense off the field and keep Leftwich upright. 2 more scores in the 3rd quarter helped to give the Skins a commanding lead. Dallas would not go away and put up 10 point in the final quarter to get within a score of Washington. On a critical 3rd down, Romo would scramble outside the pocket and decide to run for the first. Within a yard of the marker DE Jason Taylor would poke Romo in his funny bone as he was looking up at Jessica Simpson in the stands. Causing Romo to lose the ball and CB Maurice Dickey would scoop it up and race off in the opposite direction for a game securing score. The Skins would win this one 35-25.

Terryfic |
--When Terry Tanner was 5 years old, running down the streets of Peoria, Arizona, everyone knew why he was running.
"We had a dog named Pike that was a Greyhound, Terrier mix. Well only person in our family quick enough to catch him was me"; apparently Pike got loose often.
Soon this 5 year old would join the local Pop Warner Football team and begin the legend of "Terry Terrific". Terry's first coach recalls the day Terry stepped on the field:
"We were running some light drills, just getting the kids warmed up. And this kid was sprinting, at least I thought he was. So, I tell'em 'son you don't have to run so hard right now', he says to me: 'I'm not' ".
Coach Brigham would soon see he wasn't. In Terry's first game he would score 6 touchdowns and never came out of the game. Once he got to high school every opposing coach already knew seemingly everything about the star. In fact his legend stretch across into California, where Terry was born. Terry's family moved from Oxnard, California to Peoria when Terry's Dad, Steven Tanner, accepted a promotion with his company; Terry was just 18 months old. After a brilliant high school career every major college across the nation jockeyed for Terry's services. He would eventually select USC over the nearby Wildcats and Sun Devils because he felt his family back in California deserved to see his next years of football artistry. An instant impact as freshman and even more so as a sophomore Tanner quickly found himself in a familiar yet unforgiving place. Not unaccustomed to the spotlight, Tanner is articulate and very engaging, but Los Angeles, Troy, USC are a far cry from a small town out in the desert.
"It's a team sport so why can't we do interviews as a team. If my line can block 300 pound D-tackles, I'm sure they could handle a few cameramen".
The Reggie Bush comparisons were inevitable; as were the Heisman expectations. Tanner would finish in the top 3 in both his sophomore and junior seasons. The firing of Pete Carroll for a litany of NCAA improprieties hastened Tanner's entering into the NFL draft. At 5-10 205lbs, many asked would Tanner be the next Marshall Faulk or the next Leeland McElroy. Who's Leeland McElroy? Exactly. The Washington Redskins' GM/Head Coach Karmel pegged Tanner on his draft board and would take him in the 2nd round if Tanner was available. Clinton Portis had just retired and Tatum Bell had just turned 30 so a viable backup and eventual replacement was necessary. He was drafted with the 28th pick in the 2nd round and would turnout to be more than a "viable" backup. Gaining over 1000 yards rushing, averaging over 5 yards per carry, scoring nearly 20 touchdowns, and never fumbling once, Tanner would finish 2nd for NFC Offensive Rookie of the Year.
"Playing behind Tatum, who's a speed-back like myself, taught me how to use that speed. It's not like we can't run up the middle, we just can't hang out there too long."
Now the starter, Tanner is looking far more Faulk-like than like the other guy I mentioned; you forgot already, didn't you? With his team streaking towards the playoffs and Tanner leading the league in rushing TD's, yards from scrimmage, and is 3rd in rushing yards, Tanner is trying to make sure he isn't forgotten. |
